Last week we hosted a great iZindaba Zokudla in the Virtual Farmers’ Lab. We discussed hydroponics, aquaponics and vertical farming. This Lab identified and elaborated on how emerging entrepreneurs can adopt, adapt and innovate with these systems.
Please do contact our speakers should you need more information. Please find their contact details below:
We started the Lab by listening to Veronica Aswani from African Women in Agriculture, WAVONOW and the African Association for Vertical Farming. Veronica is able to assist entrepreneurs with hydroponics, business development through African Women in Agriculture AWIA, and with her latest product the “Amaveggie Pyramid”. This is a low cost system of vertical crop prodiction that uses less than 3 square meters to grow more than 100 plants, depending on the crop. This is a real solution for those with very little space.

Unathi Sihlahla from INMED gave us an excellent presentation on aquaponics. INMED has developed an aquaponics demonstration farm in Soweto and at many other locations in South Africa. These simple systems can enable anyone to produce fish and vegetables and Unathi showed us a whole series of success stories from their demonstration and training farms all over South Africa.
INMED is accessible and open to inquiries. Please do contact them if you are interested in aquaponics as a farming system. They may just have space for you in their training programmes.
